NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head women's golf coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell filled the vacancy on her staff Wednesday, announcing Matt Luther as her assistant coach.
Luther comes to OU after serving the last two years as the head men's and women's golf coach at the University of St. Thomas, an NAIA school in Houston, Texas.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., who has lived in Texas since high school, Luther was hired by St. Thomas in March 2011 and was charged with rebuilding a golf program that had been dormant for 25 years. Over Luther's two seasons there, the men's and women's teams amassed a combined seven top-five finishes, two team titles, two individual titles, three Red River Conference Player-of-the-Week honors and one second-team All-America selection. The men's team won the Red River Conference championship this past spring and finished in 12th place at the NAIA national tournament. Both teams also excelled in the classroom, earning a combined GPA of 3.44 in the 2012-13 academic year.
"I'm really excited that Matt is joining our program," said Drouin-Luttrell, who is beginning her fifth season at OU and who has led the Sooners to top-10 national finishes the last two years. "He will bring a different side of the golf business to our team, in the sense that he's a swing instructor. He has extensive experience at the teaching level and I believe we will complement each other very well. Matt has worked extremely hard to acquire different certifications, and his knowledge will benefit us."
Said Luther, "I have felt right at home from the moment I set foot in Norman and I am extremely excited to become part of the OU family. Coach Drouin-Luttrell has done a remarkable job over the past four years building the women's golf program into a perennial national contender and I look forward to the opportunity to compete for a national championship."
Before joining the St. Thomas staff, Luther served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010-11 for the men's and women's teams at Houston Baptist University, and spent five years in Texas working in player development and golf operations as an assistant golf pro at Royal Oaks Country Club and The Woodlands Country Club. While at The Woodlands, he led the junior golf program under the guidance of renowned golf instructor Kevin Kirk. Luther then implemented his own junior golf development program at Royal Oaks, teaching juniors of all ages.
Luther played collegiate golf at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, helping the Hilltoppers climb from the bottom of the Division II rankings to become one of the top programs in the country. He continues to compete professionally in the Southern Texas Section of the PGA of America.
A 2004 graduate of St. Edward's with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing, Luther is a member of the Professional Golfers Association of America and is also a Titleist Performance Institute Certified golf Fitness Instructor. He takes over at OU for Gerrod Chadwell, who was named the first women's golf head coach at the University of Houston in May.
