LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team upset second-ranked and previously unbeaten Nebraska, 2-1, Sunday in front of 1,013 fans in Lincoln, Neb. With the win, the Sooners (8-6-1, 3-3-1 in the Big 12) tied the school record for number of victories in a season. The Cornhuskers fell to 15-1 and 6-1 in the conference.
OU's victory marked Nebraska's first-ever Big 12 loss at home, and first loss to a conference foe since a 1-0 defeat to the hands of Baylor on Nov. 11, 1998. NU had not lost a game since losing to then-No. 1 Santa Clara on Sept. 17, 1999.
Sophomore forward Shannon Wing put OU on the board first when she tallied her fourth goal of the year at 28:32. Wing's goal was assisted by sophomore Jennifer Enos, who registered her first point of the season. The Sooners made it 2-0 after freshman forward Logan Womack scored her fifth goal of the season off a corner kick from junior forward Jonette Coquat in the 53rd minute of play.
Nebraska closed to within one when Christine Latham notched her 16th goal of the season, unassisted, in the 68th minute, but OU was able to hold on from there.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jana Cunningham tied a school record with 16 saves and improved to 6-5-1 on the season. NU's Karina LeBlanc (15-1) took the loss.
"What an awesome game," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "We had a game plan going in and the players executed it to perfection. What a boost for this entire program. This is great for the seniors as well."
The Sooners come home for a pair of key Big 12 games against Texas A&M (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Texas (Sunday at 1 p.m.) at the OU Soccer Complex.
