NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team will send four players to compete in the 2003 Men's Tennis Region V Championships starting Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The five-day tournament (Oct. 16-20) includes Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois, Southwest Missouri State, Tulsa, UMKC and Wichita State.

Entering in the regional championship as the No. 1 seed in doubles action is sophomore Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) and junior Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas). Sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) and junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic) are also competing in doubles, while all four will see singles action. Garrison is returning to competition after playing in the main draw of singles at the prestigious ITA/Icy Hot All-American Championships last weekend. Ivanov and Long also competed in this tournament.

Garrison returns as the Sooners No. 1 player after earning an at-large birth to the 2002 NCAA Doubles Championships. He concluded the year with an overall singles record of 18-15 and double mark of 20-8 with former Sooner Chris Mitchell. The doubles pair of Ivanov and Long established an overall doubles record of 17-4 last year.

The tournament includes two flights of singles and one flight of doubles. Flight one consist of the top three players from each team, while flight two will match players from position four through six.

Singles action starts daily at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Doubles matches are set for 3 p.m. at the Micheal D. Case Tennis Center, host of the 2004 NCAA Tennis Championships.

Head coach Paul Lockwood also entered junior Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) and sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) in the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas. The Sooner duo will be one of 15 pairs taking to the courts at the Midland Racquet Club on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18. Both Tanasoiu and Gregg will compete in singles action and pair up in doubles competition.
