NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 Oklahoma women’s golf team will be competing on its home course when it hosts the annual Susie Maxwell Berning Classic April 12-13. The tournament is being played at the 6,013- yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla.
Starters for the Sooners are seniors Hope Edge and Lisa Meldrum, junior Emily Milberger, sophomore Amparo Gala and freshman Jaclyn Stelzer.
The two-day event will be formatted with 36 holes played Monday and 18 holes played Tuesday. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
The Sooners are the only ranked team in the competition. The 15-team field includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, North Texas, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, UTEP and Wichita State.
The Sooners are the three-year defending champions of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. OU ran away from last year’s field with a 22-stroke win. The team also had four Sooners finish in the top five. Emily Milberger won the tournament title by four strokes (224) and former Sooner Allison Johnson earned fourth-place. Lisa Meldrum and Amparo Gala tied for fifth.
Oklahoma Places 11th at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic
The OU women’s golf team finished 11th at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic in Austin, Texas with 968 (+104) total strokes. The Sooners turned in their best round on the final day when they recorded a 319 (+31). The tourament champion was Vanderbilt who also had the individual champion.
OU had a different leader every round of the tournament. Amparo Gala was the Sooners final round leader and finished tied for 15th with a total of 237 (+21). Senior Hope Edge tied for 26th with 240 (+24) total strokes.
Junior Emily Milberger finished tied for 45th with a 246 (+30) while senior Lisa Meldrum tied for 68th with a 254 (+38). Freshman Jaclyn Stelzer recorded a 259 (+43) and finished tied for 79th.
Freshman Alana Donaldson competed as an individual, but didn’t compete in the first round due to an illness. Donaldson finished the tournament with an 85 (+13) in the second round and an 86 (+14) in the final round.

When senior Lisa Meldrum has finished in the top five, the Sooners have excelled as well. In the five tournaments that Meldrum placed in the top five individually, OU has finished no worse than sixth. When Meldrum has finished below the top five, the Sooners have only reached the top five on one occasion.
The Sooners are the three-time defending champs of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic which is played at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course annually. The Sooners have won the last three years by an average of 24.7 strokes. In 2001, they won by 19 strokes, in 2002 by 33 strokes and in 2003 by 22 strokes.
Returning Champion Milberger
Junior Emily Milberger returns as last year’s Susie Maxwell Berning Classic individual champion. Milberger won the 2003 tournament with a score of 224, four strokes ahead of the rest of the field. It marked Milberger’s first and only career win.
Golfer of the Month
Each month, the Big 12 Conference names a Big 12 Golfer of the Month and the Sooners have managed to earn two of the last four honors. Senior Lisa Meldrum swiped up the award in September after finishing first and second in the two tournaments OU entered. Sophomore Amparo Gala earned it in February for carding a career-best 220 in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and earning eigth-place. The Sooners are the only team in the Big 12 to have earned it more than once.
