NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team capitalized on a third place finish at the NCAA Championships as well as two national champions to sign four additional high school wrestlers to the 2003 recruiting class. Mimi Miller, Jeff Ecklof, O'Sung Kim and Joey Gorczynski joins Brandon Hardy, Charles Jones and Joel Flaggert who signed with the Sooners during the fall.
"I am very excited about this year's recruiting class even though it is not completely finished," said head coach Jack Spates. "This is one of the strongest classes I have recruited and also one of the strongest in the nation."
Miller, a Ponca City, Okla., native is projected to compete at 125 pounds. He is a three-time state champion.
Projected to compete at 149 pounds is North Hampton, Pa., native Ecklof. He is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 145 pounds and claimed a high school national championship this year. Ecklof is also a two-time Pennsylvania state champion.
Shawnee, Okla., native Kim will look to compete for the Sooners at 165 pounds. He claimed a state title and was named the Class 4A Wrestler of the Year this past season.
Gorczynski, a three-time state champion, is expected to compete at 174 pounds for teh Sooners. The incoming freshman is a native of Oolagah, Okla.
Hardy, Jones and Flaggert, whom all signed with the Sooners last fall, will also join OU starting the 2003-04 academic calendar. Hardy is a two-time Virginia state champion, from Reston, Va., who placed second at high school nationals. Jones, an Edmond North product, is a local two-time state champion who is ranked fourth nationally (152 pounds). Flaggert is ranked fourth in the country (189 pounds) and claimed a state title for Choctaw high school this year.
