NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma wrestling team will send five current and former wrestlers to compete for a spot in the world team trials when they travel to Las Vegas for the U.S. Senior Nationals April 27-30.
Sam Hazewinkel is currently ranked as the second greco-roman wrestler in the U.S. at 55 kg (121 lbs.), while former Sooners Michael Lightner and Jared Frayer are ranked fifth and sixth in freestyle at 60 kg (132 lbs.) and 66 kg (145.5 lbs.), respectively. The top seven finishers in this event qualify for the 2005 Senior World Team Trials in Ames, Iowa from June 17-19.
Last year, Hazewinkel placed third at the Senior Nationals behind a pair of Olympic medalists, Brandon Paulson of the Minnesota Storm and Dennis Hall of the Sunkist Kids, with a win over Joe Espinoza of Stockton, Calif. by decision, 7-0.
OU freshman Will Rowe and Jarrod King will compete at 66 kg and 74 kg at the FILA Junior Nationals being held this weekend in Las Vegas as well.
The top wrestler in each weight class after the team trials in June will represent the United States in the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 26-28.
