NORMAN, Okla. -- The 16th-ranked University of Oklahoma volleyball team opened the 2011 season Friday night with a sweep of Southern Methodist University in three sets (-20, -25, -16) in the nightcap of the Nike Invitational.
The Sooners (1-0) started the first set strong, winning 25-20 before the Mustangs (0-1) rallied to keep the match close in the second set. The second set featured five lead changes and 17 ties before the Sooners ultimately came out on top, 27-25. The third set started close, but OU eventually pulled away for a 25-16 win to take the match.

Senior Brianne Barker (Amarillo, Texas) led the way with her 58th career double-double, registering 40 assists and 10 digs. The 40 assists gave Barker her 38th game career match with 40 or more assists.

Senior Suzy Boulavsky (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Sallie McLaurin (Midwest City, Okla.) led OU with 10 kills each. Junior Morgan Reynolds (Blue Springs, Mo.) added nine kills. Junior Maria Fernanda (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) had a team-high 12 digs. Boulavsky led the team with four block assists. Caitlin Higgins (Amarillo, Texas) added eight kills and eight digs and had one block solo.

Senior Carlee Roethlisberger (Findlay, Ohio) made her first career start at middle block. Roethlisberger recorded three kills, two digs and three block assists in two sets played.

Also seeing the court for the first time in their careers were freshmen Grace Whitley (Kansas City, Mo.) and Caroline Weir (Dallas, Texas). Whitley started the third set and had three kills and one block assist.

As a team, the Sooners had four service aces. OU hit a .258 clip as a team, led by Barker who hit .400, and Reynolds and McLaurin hit .333 each.

For SMU, Dana Powell had 12 kills and nine digs. Sidney Stewart had 17 digs. As a team, SMU hit .133.

Tournament action resumes Saturday at McCasland Field House, beginning at 10 a.m. CT with Missouri State facing SMU. The Sooners face Oral Roberts at noon. Oral Roberts plays SMU at 5 p.m. before OU and Missouri State close out the event with a 7 p.m. CT contest. GameTracker for all matches is available at
