HOUSTON - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team opened action at the Houston Invitational Friday afternoon. The Sooners (3-2) faced their first ranked opponent of the season and fell in straight sets, -23, -19, -18, to No. 17 Tennessee (4-0).
Juniors Suzy Boulavsky (Houston, Texas) and Caitlin Higgins (Amarillo, Texas) had seven kills each for OU. Senior Sarah Freudenrich (Broken Arrow, Okla.) had six kills and led the Sooners with a .545 hitting percentage.
Sophomore María Fernanda (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) added 12 digs, while junior setter Brianne Barker (Amarillo, Texas) had 22 assists.
Freshman Sallie McLaurin (Midwest City, Okla.) set an OU 25-point rally scoring record for most blocks in a three-set match with three block solos.
Nikki Fowler led Tennessee with 21 kills, while two Lady Vols posted double-digit assists and digs.
The Sooners close out action in the tournament Saturday. OU faces host Houston at noon CT and finishes with No. 13 Florida State at 5 p.m. CT. Live stats are available at SoonerSports.com.
