FULLERTON, Calif. – In its first game of the 2009 Judi Garman Classic, the ninth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team dropped a close, 4-3, decision to the University of Notre Dame. The Sooners (19-7) rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but a miscue by OU in the bottom half of the inning allowed the Fighting Irish (7-6) to take the win.
Notre Dame struck first in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI home run by Christie Lux over the right field fence. The Sooners responded in the top of the third when freshman Evan Sallis reached base on a two-out walk. Sallis then scored on junior Amber Flores’ double to left center.
Oklahoma put two runners on board in the fourth but was unable to add any runs. With two outs, senior Jeannie Douglas singled up the middle and advanced to second on a single to left field by Haley Anderson. The Fighting Irish added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Christine Farrell scored on an RBI single up the middle by Lux.
Oklahoma rallied in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Pinch hitter Wendy Trott singled up the middle and Sallis followed with a single to the pitcher to put two runners on with one out. Flores then reached on a fielding error to score sophomore Dani Dobbs, who ran for Trott. The Fighting Irish intentionally walked senior Samantha Ricketts and junior Lindsey Vandever kept the bases loaded with a fielder’s choice that saw Sallis out at home. Down to the final out, freshman Katie Norris reached on an error and another error scored Flores to tie the game heading into the bottom of the final frame.
In the bottom half of the inning, Lux led off with a walk and a pinch hitter for the Fighting Irish resulted in a pitching change for the Sooners as freshman Allee Allen replaced Kirsten Allen in the circle. Pinch hitter Beth Northway singled up the middle as did the next pinch hitter Dani Miller. With the bases loaded, leadoff batter Sadie Pitzenberger sent a ball up the middle and A. Allen misplayed the hop as Lux crossed the plate to give the Fighting Irish the 4-3 win.
Flores led OU at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs driven in and another scored. Ricketts went 1-for-2 and drew two walks on the day.
K. Allen (6-4) picked up the loss for Oklahoma, allowing three runs, two of which were earned. K. Allen gave up three hits and walked one. Senior D.J. Mathis pitched four solid innings for OU, giving up one earned run on two hits and struck out six. A. Allen faced three batters in the seventh.
Relief pitch Brittney Bargar (5-2) got the win for Notre Dame. Lux paced all batters at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three runs driven in and two runs scored. Lux also drew one walk during the game.
