OU Defeats Kansas State, 4-3, Senior Day Sunday

NORMAN, Okla. – The 21st-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team won its fourth straight match Friday over No. 41 Kansas State, 4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Oklahoma (15-5, 7-2 Big 12) won its 11th match against a nationally ranked opponent with the victory over KSU.

The Sooners won their 17th doubles point of the season to take the early 1-0 lead over the Wildcats. OU won all three doubles matches, giving up just five games total over the three matches.

“We played some of our best doubles of the season tonight and it is exciting to see us continue to improve in that area,” OU Head Coach David Mullins said.

Freshmen Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie shut out Kansas State’s Karla Bonacic and Petra Chuda, 8-0, at the No. 2 spot to start the match.  The duo has won 11 of its 12 doubles matches this season, with its only loss coming against Tulsa.

Senior Tara Eckel and junior Marie-Pier Huet clinched OU’s double point win with their 8-1 victory over KSU’s Carmen Borau and Ana Gomez at the No. 3 position.

OU’s 51st-ranked doubles pair, Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu, finished the doubles sweep for the Sooners.  The duo defeated Niedermayerava and Nina Sertic of Kansas State, 8-4, at the No. 1 position.
OU won the first three singles matches at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions in straight sets to secure the win over Kansas State.

“Four, five and six really came through for us again tonight but I have no doubt that Ana, Alice and Whit will really step up on Sunday,” Mullins said.

In OU’s three singles wins, the Sooners gave up three games or fewer in all six sets and gave up one game or fewer in four of the six.

Huet brought OU’s lead to 2-0 with her win against KSU’s Sertic at the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 6-1.  Kalashnikova won OU’s third point after defeating Borau at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3.

Lancaster clinched the win for OU after topping Chuda of KSU at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0.

OU dropped the final three singles matches against the Wildcats.  Constantinescu lost to Niedermayerava at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-4, Radu fell to Bonacic at the No. 2 position, 7-6, 7-2, while Ritchie lost at the No. 3 spot to Gomez, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (8).

The Sooners host their final home match of 2011 on Sunday, April 17 at noon.  OU will honor seniors Constantinescu, Eckel and Kalashnikova in a special ceremony during their final match at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Fans in attendance will receive a free t-shirt, free pizza and a fan banner.  Admission to all OU tennis home events is free.
