OU Men's Tennis Advances In ITA Action

NORMAN, Okla.   Marek Velicka quickly defeated Arsten Burnistrau of Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-3, Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. Velicka is the only Sooner still active in the main draw as he improves his fall record to 7-2. 

Fellow teammate and ninth seeded Ondrej Fukala lost to sixth seeded Rohan Gajjar of Arkansas, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16.

Oklahoma advanced all three doubles teams to the quarterfinals Saturday, but only a pair moved forward. Federico Chavarria and Alexei Ivanov earned two victories on the day to qualify for the semifinals Sunday. The duo opened quarterfinal action with an easy 8-1 win over Jake Craney and Vinny Meens of Creighton, followed by an 8-5 victory over Carlo Contente and Moti Eiskovits of Wichita State.

The top seeded doubles team of OU’s Ondrej Fukala and Tommy Garrison defeated Nebraska’s James Clow and Joel Reckeway, 8-6, in the round of 16 before being upset by Tulsa’s Achim Roth and Aleksander Charpantidis, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.

Sunday’s competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the Main Draw singles quarterfinal and semifinal matches followed by doubles action and consolation play.
