NEW YORK – OU’s Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie lost in the round of 16 of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Doubles Championship Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Huet and Ritchie advanced to the round of 16 after rallying against Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus of Maryland in the opening round.  The OU duo overcame a 6-3 deficit to defeat Belzunce and Luus, 8-6.

“In the first match, the girls started off slow and were making too many mistakes,” OU assistant coach Brook Connelly said. “They got going after being down 4-0 and played great doubles to end up with the win.”

The Sooners kept it close in their second match but were edged out by Duke’s Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfield, 9-7.

“The second match was against a very solid Duke team and we have to give them credit,” Connelly said. “Whitney and Marie-Pier played smart doubles and defended well, but just weren’t able to capitalize after being up 7-6.”

The rest of the team will play at the 19th annual Eck Tennis Classis hosted by the University of Notre Dame, Nov. 4-6.

“We’re very excited about Notre Dame for the other four players,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We’re playing Mississippi State, Wake Forest and Notre Dame so we expect the level to be really good.”

The tournament is a round-robin format with teams playing in dual-style matches.

“Obviously, going out there without Whitney and Marie-Pier will be tough,” Mullins added. “Everybody will have to step up a couple positions and be ready to play.”

The Eck Tennis Classis is the last stop for OU this fall season before preparing for spring dual season.
