OU Competes With The Elite At Ohio State

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team continues its 2001-02 season on Sept. 28-30 (Fri.-Sun.) as the Sooners travel to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the Ping/Golfweek Preview at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course. Twelve of the 15 teams participating finished among the Top 15 teams in the country last year at the NCAA Championships in Durham, N.C. The Sooners tied for 12th.

Included among the 2001 Preview field are: Florida, 2001 NCAA Champions, and Top 10 finishers: Clemson (2), Arizona (3), Georgia Tech (4), Georgia (5), Arizona State (6), Augusta State (7), Virginia Tech (8), East Tennessee State (9) and Wake Forest (10). Pacific (11), Pacific (T22), Oklahoma State (24) and host school Ohio State will also be competing.

Practice rounds begin Thursday at 9 a.m. Tee times begin Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final round beginning Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

The 2002 NCAA Tournament will be played at The Ohio State Scarlet Course May 27-June 1, 2002, in Columbus, Ohio.

In the Rankings
After one event, Golfweek has Oklahoma ranked No. 3 in the nation with a rating of 69.29. Sophomore Martin Flores is the third ranked player in the nation with a rating of 67.14 while senior J.D. Robertson is 41st with a rating of 69.73...Golfworld still has the Sooners at 11th.

All Eyes On Flores
Sophomore Martin Flores has gotten more attention after an impressive third-place showing at The Ridges Intercollegiate. Flores was named to the Golf World '50 College Players To Watch' list. Flores is coming off a solid freshman campaign where he posted three top-10 finishes including a second-place finish at regionals.

Martin Flores (So., Mansfield, Texas) - Making his 16th consecutive start for OU...Finished in third place at The Ridges Intercollegiate to lead all Sooners golfers...Shot his career low-round (67) in the first round and went on to post rounds 71 and 69 for a total of 207 (-9)...It was the second top-five finish of his career and fourth top-10 finish...Currently leads the Sooners with a stroke average of 69.00.
