OU Mens Tennis Sweeps Oral Roberts, 7-0

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men’s tennis team swept Oral Roberts, 7-0, for the second time this season on Wednesday at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooners dominated in the doubles and singles matches to claim victory. OU improves to 13-2 while the Golden Eagles fall to to 0-7 on the season.

"We’re glad to have celebrated another 7-0 victory [over ORU] and to have won all of the matches," said head coach Paul Lockwood. "We didn’t play our best at every position, but I’m proud of the guys. The competition goes up a notch in a few days and we’re ready for it."

Oklahoma started off strong in the doubles winning at all three positions. The undefeated duo of Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) and Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) moved to 5-0 on the season with an 8-2 victory over ORU’s Patrick Guilliod and Umair Qayyum. The only close doubles match of the day was junior Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas) and sophomore Alexei Ivanov’s (Izhevsk, Russia) 9-8 win over ORU’s Wessel Kemp and Adam Ehrlich at the No. 2 spot.

OU won five of the six matches in straight-sets. Junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic), sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.), Long and Tanasoiu all posted singles victories for the Sooners. The two newcomers of sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and Velicka remain undefeated after celebrating triumphs over their opponents. Gregg is now 14-0 on the season and Velicka has a flawless 15-0 record.

The Sooners move on to Big 12 competition against No. 20 Texas A&M on Sat., March 27, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. OU then faces No. 28 Texas on Sun., March 28, at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. Action is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
