A Closer Look

DENTON, Texas -- The University of Oklahoma women's gymnastics opened its 2001 season by defeating Texas Woman's University, 194.025-189.300, Friday in Denton, Texas. The victory marked the debut of OU Co-Head Coach Steve Nunno and increased the Sooners' all-time series lead against TWU to 34-3.

Oklahoma put together a strong performance throughout as the Sooners garnered the top two spots in every event. Sophomore Leticia Ishii led the way by claiming the all-around title with a score of 38.825 and first-place finishes on the uneven bars (9.900) and the floor exercise (9.825). Freshman Kasie Tamayo and sophomore Leah Mueller began their OU careers with first-place finishes as well. Tamayo won the balance beam (9.925) while Mueller claimed the top spot on the vault with a score of 9.825.

The Sooners (1-0) will next travel to the state of California for meets in San Jose and Berkeley on Jan. 19 and 21, respectively. Each meet will consist of four teams. In San Jose, the Sooners will face San Jose State, Arizona and California. When the Sooners visit Berkeley, they will meet California, Arizona and Utah State.
