In its first tournament of the spring, the Oklahoma women’s golf team will compete in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Dorado, Puerto Rico (Feb. 22-24). OU is coming off its best fall season in history when it recorded two tournament championships in back-to-back outings.
The No. 15 (Golfweek) ranked Sooners look to compete for another championship at the 6,000-yard, par-72 Dorado Del Mar Country Club. Senior Hope Edge, sophomore Amparo Gala, senior Lisa Meldrum, junior Emily Milberger and freshman Jaclyn Stelzer will be back in action again for OU. Meldrum, who is recovering from a month-long battle with mononucleosis, is ranked as the No. 10 golfer in the country and leads the Big 12 in stroke average (72.20).
The Sooners will be competing against a 15-team field that includes No. 1 Duke, No. 5 Auburn, No. 7 Georgia, No. 12 USC, No. 13 Florida, No. 14 Tulane, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 17 Tulsa, No. 18 Texas, No. 21 Wake Forest, No. 27 Missouri, No. 28 Kent State, Michigan, Penn State and Purdue.
OU Records Best Fall Season In History
In its quest for the NCAA Championships, the Sooners started off the 2003-04 season with a record-breaking fall. Oklahoma finished the fall schedule ranked No. 12 in Golfstat and No. 14 in Golfweek, its highest recorded fall ranking ever. Adding to its list of achievements, OU recorded two tournament championships in back-to-back outings at the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate (Oct. 6-8) and at the Kent Youel Invitational (Nov. 4-5). It marked the first time the Sooners have won two tournaments in the fall season.
Individually, the Sooners had at least two golfers finish in the top 20 in every tournament. Lisa Meldrum finished in the top five in every tournament. Meldrum earned four second-place finishes and one fifth-place finish. Meldrum was also honored as Big 12 Golfer of the Month in September.
Two other Sooners also finished in the top five of a tournament this fall. Junior Emily Milberger tied for fifth place at the Kent Youel Invitational and senior Hope Edge earned fifth-place honors at the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate.
