NORMAN, Okla. - The fourth-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team (4-3) will head to California this weekend to take on Fresno State and Cal Poly. Both matches will take place on Saturday as the Sooners take on the Bulldogs at noon in Fresno and Mustangs at 7:30 p.m in San Luis Obispo. The Sooners, who are ranked fourth by Amateur Wrestling News, lost by a tiebreaker to No. 14 Arizona State, 21-21, Wednesday night in Tempe, Ariz.
"Every meet from here on out is going to be tough," said head coach Jack Spates. "We need to come on strong and stay consistent and battle through."
Oklahoma will compete with the same line-up that it wrestled with against Arzona State. Freshman Teyon Ware continue to start at 141 pounds, while senior Nate Parker will remain in the 149 pound spot. The Sooners will also keep sophomore Joel Tapler in the heavyweight division.
The Sooners' first dual of the day will be against Fresno State, who won its first two home duals by beating Columbia, 23-14, and Oregon State, 24-9. Oklahoma leads the series with Fresno State 14-5. Fresno State's only ranked wrestler will be 14th-ranked Eddie Gifford at 174 pounds, who will face Oklahoma's Josh Lambrecht (11-1).
Other probable starters for Fresno State are Sal Gonzales (125 pounds), Ben Martinez (133 pounds), Casey Olson (141 pounds) and Zhon Kuraspediani (149 pounds). Fresno State will start either Jim Medeiros or Seab Sheets at 157 pounds. Rounding out the Fresno State line-up will be Ben Baca (165 pounds), Jatinder Singh (184 pounds), Marcio Botelho (197 pounds) and Clint Walbeck (heavyweight).
Oklahoma will then meet Cal Poly at 7 p.m. for the second dual of the day. Cal Poly is currently 3-3 in dual action after winning only one of its four matches at the Lone Star Duals. Oklahoma also leads this series 24-3-2. Senior Bo Maynes will face No. 11 Vic Moreno at 125 pounds, which is Cal Poly's only ranked wrestler.
Competing for the Mustangs will be Andy Kim (133 pounds), Jeff Owens (141 pounds), Matt Cox (149 pounds), Nick Hopping (157 pounds), Brett Schumann (165 pounds), Joe Brady (174 pounds), Ryan Halsey (184 pounds), David Schenk (197 pounds) and Dan Howe (heavyweight).
