OU Holds Second Intrasquad Meet

NORMAN, Okla. - The 10th-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics program continued its preseason training schedule with the its first full-set intrasquad of the 2008-09 season on Sunday at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center in Norman, Okla.

The Sooners competed eight gymnasts on each event, allowing the coaching staff a closer look at potential 2009 event lineups. 

Seniors Haley DeProspero, Ashley Jackson and Jessica Kinder were joined by freshman Natasha Kelley in all-around competition.

“Overall, I was pleased with our effort today,” said head coach K.J. Kindler.  “We will take a look at the tape tomorrow in practice and detail areas of improvement.  I believe that our consistency continues to improve with every week of training and with continued effort and dedication, we can get to where we need to be to reach our season goals.”

Conducting the meet in traditional Olympic rotation order, the Sooners received an event-high 9.85 from Kelley on vault.  OU also garnered a 9.825 from Melanie Root and a pair of 9.8s from Sara Stone and Kristin Smith. 

Moving to bars, Oklahoma was led by Jackson’s 9.825.  The routine was followed by freshman Megan Ferguson’s 9.8.

DeProspero continued her beam supremacy from a year ago, posting a team-high 9.825.   The Sooners also received a quartet of 9.775s (Kinder, Hollie Vise, Kelley and Stone) on the apparatus.

The Sooners ended the scrimmage by unveiling their new floor routines to the delight of the crowd, as DeProspero once again led OU with a score of 9.875 – Oklahoma’s highest on the afternoon.  Jackson notched a 9.825, while several other Sooner gymnasts posted solid routines.

The reigning Big 12 Champs will hold one final intrasquad on Dec. 20 before the team departs for the holiday break. 

OU opens the 2009 season on Jan. 9 in Gainesville, Fla., against the Gators of the University of Florida.  The dual comes a day after the two program’s football squad’s face-off in the BCS national championship in Miami.
