NORMAN, Okla. -- Two University of Oklahoma student-athletes are among the U.S. contingent headed to Guanajuato, Mexico, for the bi-annual North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships held July 6-8.

OU's George Alex, who exhausted his collegiate eligibility this season, and senior-to-be Riley Masters will compete for Team USA in distance running events.

Alex will run the 5,000 meters and Masters the 1,500 meters, the same events the two competed at the recent U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

Alex is Oklahoma's record holder in the mile run (3:58.76), the indoor 3,000 meters (7:52.92) and the 5,000 meters (13:35.27). The Phoenix, Ariz., native dominated the Big 12 in distance in 2012, winning the conference titles in the indoor 3,000 and sweeping the outdoor 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs.

Masters is the OU record holder in the 1,500 (3:37.19) and ran legs on the Sooners' record-setting distance medley and 4x800-meter relays.  The Bangor, Maine, product was the 2012 Big 12 1,500-meter run champion.

Past NACAC U23 champions include former Sooners Ronnie Ash (men's 110-meter hurdles, 2010) and Leslie Cole (women's 200 meters, 2008) and OU senior Karen Shump (women's shot put, 2010).
