NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team carded a 301 (+13) in the first round of the 18-team Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday at the Red Sky Fazio Golf Course in Edwards, Colo. The Sooners stand in seventh place in a competitive field that features 10 other teams ranked in Golfweek's top 50.

The 27th-ranked Sooners trail leader and 26th-ranked UC Davis by seven strokes and are just four shots out of second place.

"We played very well on the front nine," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin of her team, which stood at +2 midway through the day. "We have two days left and a lot can happen in these next two rounds. So having a good round tomorrow will definitely boost our confidence."
 
Per usual, Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil came out strong for the Sooners. The sophomore shot even par on the front nine and eagled the 18th hole for a 2-under 70. She is in fourth place among 90 golfers, just one stroke behind a trio of competitors who shot a 69.  

Fellow sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay also shot even on the front nine and finished with a 75 (+3). She is tied for 26th place.

Junior Taylor Schmidt fired a 77 (+5) while junior Jacki Marshall and sophomore Jade Staggs carded 79 and 80, respectively. Schmidt finished the day tied for 39th place, Marshall is tied for 61st at (+7) and Staggs is tied for 73rd place at (+8).

Round two of the Golfweek Conference Challenge begins Tuesday with the Sooners teeing off at 11 a.m. CT. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
