NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team tees off at the 18-team Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 19-20 (Saturday and Sunday), hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Sooners will compete at the par-73, 6,187-yard University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
"This tournament has 11 teams ranked in the top-50," first-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin said. "A good tournament in New Mexico could definitely help our ranking."
At the top of the lineup for the Sooners is junior Ellen Mueller. The Evansville, Ind., native tied for third at last week's Texas A&M "Mo" Morial Invitational, her fourth career top-five finish.
Brooke Collins returns to the second spot of the Sooner lineup after a solid performance at the Texas A&M Invitational. The sophomore tied for eighth place, a career-best finish.
Freshman Taylor Schmidt will make her collegiate debut this week. The Kincardine, Ontario, native competed at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship stroke play round in June, as well the four-round Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship (she finished 15th) in August.
The Sooners opened the season last week at a rainy Texas A&M "Mo"Morial Invitational in Bryan, Texas, with a single-round score of 309 (+21). Due to inclement weather, the second and third rounds were cancelled, shortening the tournament to 18 holes.
"The girls are definitely ready to get back out there this week," Drouin said. "We had a short week of practice, but worked hard on different aspects of the game."
Ranked No. 26 by Golfweek, New Mexico will host No.14 Pepperdine, No.16 Arkansas, No.30 UC Irvine, No. 31 TCU, No. 34 San Francisco, No.35 Oregon, No.36 Texas A&M, No.47 Colorado, No.50 UC Davis, No.55 Indiana, Colorado State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, San Diego State, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.
Thirty-six holes will be played Saturday starting at 9 a.m. CT, followed by 18 holes Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m. Live stats can be accessed at http://golfstat.com/.
