VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf squad placed 12th at the rain-shortened Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala., on Tuesday.
The Sooners posted an 18-hole team score of 292 (+12) at the par-70, 7,204-yard layout. The field was scheduled to play 36 holes yesterday, but the two rounds were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Leading OU was sophomore Riley Pumphrey in a share of 11th at -1. Starting on the back nine, the Georgetown, Texas, product was even-par at the turn, erasing a bogey at the par-4 14th with a birdie at No. 18. Pumphrey made par on the first four holes on the front before reaching red figures with a birdie convert at the par-4 fifth hole. Pumphrey made par at his final four holes of the round, remaining at -1 for the tournament.
“I thought that Riley played exceptionally well, but unfortunately wasn’t helped much, as we were too inconsistent today,” said head coach Ryan Hybl. “We’ve got a couple of weeks before our next event and look to put in some quality practice to close out the final two fall events strong.”
Chris Wilson carded a 73 and finished in a tie for 36th. The Oklahoma junior notched a pair of birdies at the seventh and 13th, but carded five bogeys in nine holes, including three in a row starting at No. 2. Matching Wilson’s 73 was senior Ben Blundell. The Rowlett, Texas, native rebounded from a double-bogey six at No. 10 – his opening hole, and played his final 17 holes at +1.
Rounding out the OU scoring were Nathan Chambers and Eric Durbin, with rounds of 77 and 80, respectively. Chambers placed T53rd in his second collegiate event, while Durbin finished 59th in his season debut.
Tournament-host Alabama won its fourth-consecutive Jerry Pate team title with a 7-under-par 273 final tally. Hunter Hamrick of the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide shot a 5-under-par 65 and cleared the field by a shot for medalist honors.
The Sooners return to the links Oct. 26-27, at the Baylor Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas. Last season, OU defeated a pair of squads ranked in the Golfstat top-10 (No. 2 Arkansas and No. 10 Baylor) en route to a share of second place at the event.
