COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated West Virginia in the first round of the National Duals in Columbus, Ohio, today. The Sooners recorded victories in their first three weights and never lost the lead. Oklahoma lost just three matches, before forfeiting the heavyweight match-up. Oklahoma now moves to 7-3 on the year, with senior Witt Durden remaining undefeated (13-0).

"This was a great win. West Virginia is a very tough team and there were some very tough match-ups," said head coach Jack Spates. "This was a good win for our team."

Oklahoma started out the dual with a decision at 125 pounds, when Sooner senior Bo Maynes defeated Seth Lisa, 7-1. The Sooners received bonus points in the 133-pound weight class from All-American Witt Durden with a major decision of 11th ranked Brandon Lauer, 19-6. Freshman Teyon Ware, who is ranked 16th, defeated 12th-ranked Shane Cunanan, 7-4, at 141 pounds.

"We saw a good performance from Teyon Ware today," stated Spates. "He dug himself a hole and had to battle back. That shows how much character he has."

Oklahoma sophomore Matt Grice, competing in his first dual action of the year at 149 pounds, was pinned by seventh-ranked Billy Smith at 6:42. Junior Rafael Maturino, Oklahoma's 157 pound wrestler, scored two near fall's at the buzzer of the first two periods to decision Matt Lebe of West Virginia, 14-8. The Sooners then lost the 165-pound battle as sophomore Wes Roberts was decisioned, 5-2, by eighth-ranked Tom McMath. OU received an amazing performance at 174 pounds from fifth-ranked Robbie Waller, but it wasn't enough for him the beat top ranked defending national champion Greg Jones. Jones decisioned Waller by a score of 6-5.

"I am very proud of Robbie Waller," said Spates. "He wrestled the defending national champion and with two more feet of mat, he would have beaten him."

Senior Josh Lambrecht scored an 8-0 major decision over West Virginia's 18th-ranked Ryan Wilman. The dual was decided by the 197-pound match-up as senior Tom Grossman defeated Adrian Thompson, 3-1. Oklahoma forfeited the heavyweight match-up.
