NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball team opened the fall schedule Wednesday evening with an 18-2 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State at the OU Softball Complex.

“We have a lot to work on,” said Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso. “But with only one week under our belt, it’s a good win for us.”

After getting off to a slow start that saw the Rangers take an early 1-0 lead, Oklahoma answered back in the bottom of the first when junior Krystle Huey reached on a two-base error and then scored on a two-base error to tie the game at 1-1. Oklahoma added five runs in the third, two in the fourth and four each in the fifth and sixth before tacking on two more runs in the seventh.

In the top of the seventh, the Rangers plated one run and loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Drew Wright initiated a double play to freshman catcher Jessica Shults and junior first baseman Haley Nix to end the threat.

“We just wanted a quick double play to end it," Gasso said. "It was all initiated by [sophomore Allee Allen’s] pitch, and then the defense just did their job.”

Senior Lindsey Vandever went 3-for-5 with three runs driven in and one walk. One of Vandever’s three hits was a three-run home run. Freshman Keilani Ricketts also tallied a 3-for-5 night. Ricketts drove in three runs on a double and two-run home run. She recorded one walk on the evening. Shults ended the game 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Junior Chana’e Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Nix was reached base on two hit by pitches.

OU takes on Connors State Friday at 4:45 p.m. CT as a part of the Fall Festival. At 7 p.m. the Sooners play Odessa College. The tournament continues throughout the weekend.
