OU Men's Tennis Dominates SMS and East Central

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men’s tennis team blew away Southwest Missouri State and East Central today at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Oklahoma defeated SMS, 6-1, and swept East Central, 7-0. The Sooners are now 13-1, while SMS drops to 3-5 and East Central falls to 8-6.

The Sooners were strong early in their first match of the day against SMS claiming the doubles point and winning five of six singles matches. The OU duo of senior Silviu Tanasoiu and sophomore Marek Velicka continue to dominate the No. 2 doubles position. The pair beat Baylor’s 22nd ranked duo of Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke on Friday and didn’t stop on Sunday. Tanasoiu and Velicka defeated SMS’s Nenad Curcic and Jeff Stone, 8-4.

In singles play, OU was led by Velicka at the No. 1 spot who defeated Jiri Spousta 6-2, 7-5.

Against East Central the Sooners dominated early, winning all six singles matches. Oklahoma didn’t drop a single set to East Central. Freshman Federico Chavarria picked up his first singles win of the season against ECU’s Matt Folsom winning 6-4, 6-0, while teammate Ondrej Fukala improves to 10-1 on the season by defeating Jack Odengren, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action against the Tigers, OU won all three matches. Leading the way at the No. 1 spot was Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison by defeating Quynh Tran and Odengren, 8-1.

Next up the Sooners will take on Big 12 opponent Texas Tech on Wednesday, March 30 in Lubbock, Texas. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m.
