Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season

NORMAN, Okla. --The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team completed their first day of match play at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.  The Sooners opened the fall season on a good note with all three men winning singles matches.


Competing in the No.1 singles, sophomore Sergey Avdeyev defeated Nate Nelms of Navy.  Avdeyev won the fist set 7-6(4) but fell 3-6 in the second.  In the final set Ayedev took the victory (6- 4).


In the No.3 singles junior Federico Chavarria defeated Navy’s Johnny Waters in a long match.  Chavarria came from behind after losing the first set 4-6, but he finished out the match winning 6-4 in the second set and 7-5 in the third.


Junior Ryan Thomas defeated Navy’s Ramsey Lemaich at in the No. 5 singles.  With all three sets close, Thomas came out with the victory 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-3.


In doubles matches, the duo Chavarria/Thomas won 8-3 over Navy’s Lemaich/Nelms competing in No.1 doubles.  Avdeyev teamed up with University of Arkansas team member Lebedev Dmitry in the No. 2 doubles. The pair lost 6-8 to Navy’s Jason Hill/Waters.


The Sooners continue day two at the Navy Invitational Saturday at 1 p.m.
