OU Ranked Preseason No. 25

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team will start the 2012 season ranked a program-best No. 25 in the ITA preseason top 75, released Tuesday.

This is the second-straight season OU is ranked in the preseason poll. The No. 25 ranking is the highest preseason ranking in school history, OU’s previous best was in 2005 when the Sooners started the season ranked No. 26.

OU is the third-highest ranked Big 12 team in the 2012 poll, trailing just No. 6 Baylor and No. 21 Texas.  Other Big 12 schools ranked in the top 75 include No. 29 Texas A&M, No. 46 Kansas State, No. 46 Texas Tech and No. 75 Oklahoma State.

Sooners’ double tandem of Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie start the season ranked No. 22 nationally in doubles in the ITA top 75.  The duo won the ITA Central Regional Championship on Oct. 24 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships before losing to Duke’s Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfield, 9-7.

The Sooners enter 2012 following their second consecutive NCAA appearance last season.  OU finished the season with the fourth-most wins in program history after advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the third time in school history.

OU finished third in the Big 12 in the 2011 season, its highest conference standing since 2004 when OU also finished third. The Sooners reached the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament for just the fourth time in history.

The Sooners start the 2012 season on Jan. 21 with a doubleheader against Drake and Arkansas-Little Rock in Norman beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
