OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2008 season as it defeated Fresno State 6-1, Friday afternoon at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City.

OU burst out of the gates to take the first two doubles matches over Fresno State.

"Picking up the first victory of the season is always great but doing so against a quality opponent makes it even better," OU head coach Paul Lockwood said.

The Sooners took the doubles point to begin the match as Ionut Beleleu and Ryan Thomas, playing No. 2 doubles defeated A.J. Kerin/Denny Fafek, 8-4.

The No. 1 doubles team of Federico Chavarria and Andrei Daescu followed with a victory over Mirko Zapletal/Tejesvi Veerepalli, 8-6.  The Bulldogs and Sooners began the match tied at one.  After each team traded points the Sooners took a 3-2 lead and never looked back.

The No. 3 doubles team of Sergey Avdeyev and Alex Joitoiu defeated Taylor Leiby and Rudy Siwy, 8-6.

"We played very well for our first doubles match of the season and it's nice to get the victory," senior Chavarria said.  "More importantly our team won all three doubles matches and earned the point in doubles play.  Fresno State played good tennis but we were able to capitalize when the opportunity arose."

Daescu, playing No. 1 singles, disposed of Zapletal 6-3, 6-1.  With the victory Daescu put the Sooners up 2-0.  Beleleu, playing No. 3 singles, defeated Veerepalli taking the match, 6-3, 6-4.  The victory gave the Sooners a commanding 3-0 advantage over the Bulldogs.  Avdeyev, playing No. 2 singles, was defeated, in a two-hour-plus match, by Rudy Siwy of Fresno State, 6-4, (3-6), 6-3.  The loss moved the score to 3-1 in favor Oklahoma.
"Zapletal is a very tough competitor and I am very fortunate to have played as well as I did," Daescu said.  "I am very happy to come away with the victory because it helped us keep the momentum from the doubles victory and it gave us a 2-0 lead."

"Winning both doubles matches gave us great momentum heading into singles play and I think that helped carry us throughout the rest of the match," Lockwood said.  "I am very proud of all of our athletes because they came prepared to play and it showed on the court"

Vlad Marinescu, playing No. 4 singles, defeated Fafek, 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Sooners.  The score pushed Oklahoma ahead, 4-1.  Joitoiu, playing No. 5 singles, defeated Nilsson, 6-2, 6-3.  The victory pressed the score to 5-1 in favor of Oklahoma.

Chavarria finished singles play against Sidd Harth Alapati and won, 7-5, 7-5.
