NORMAN, Okla. -- Five University of Oklahoma softball players were named to the 24-member 1999 National Fastpitch Coaches Association first and second teams Wednesday, more than any other school. Senior Lynette Velazquez, sophomore Lisa Carey and freshman Jennifer Stewart were named to the first team while sophomore Ashli Barrett and freshman Christy Ring were second-team selections. The teams were voted on by Midwest Region head coaches.
Velazquez, a first baseman from Huntington Beach, Calif., was named Big 12 Player of the Year last week. She owns a .403 batting average and leads the conference in home runs (20), runs batted in (61) and slugging percentage (.836). Her 20 round-trippers are an OU single-season record while her 61 RBIs tie the school single-season mark.
Shortstop Carey, from Topeka, Kan., is batting .314 with six homers and 35 RBIs. She was also a first-team All-Big 12 selection.
Stewart, OUs top pitcher, was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and was a first-team All-Big 12 pick. She is 21-5 this season with a 1.14 earned run average. From Yukon, Okla., Stewart threw a no-hitter versus Oklahoma Christian in her collegiate debut Feb. 9 and added a perfect game against Wichita State April 6.
Barrett boasts a .337 batting average, seven home runs and 31 RBIs. A first-team All-Big 12 catcher, Barrett has thrown out 27 of 44 would-be basestealers.
Speedy outfielder Ring is hitting .335 and ranks second on the OU squad with 12 stolen bases. Ring was a second-team All-Big 12 selection.
The Sooners, 39-14 overall and Big 12 regular season champions, begin NCAA Regional competition as the No. 2 seed in Baton Rouge, La., today at 4 p.m. against fifth-seeded Long Beach State.
