NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team recorded a first-round 287 (-1) Monday and stands in sixth place at the 16-team Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.

The Sooners, who are No. 26 in this week’s Golfweek rankings, trail leader Pepperdine by 10 strokes and second-place San Diego State by seven shots.

“We made a ton of birdies today, but also shot some big numbers,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “As long as the girls stay consistent with their pars and birdies we will be fine, because we have two days left. There is a lot of golf and are plenty of opportunities still in front of us. Our biggest thing is that we need to be more patient and let putts fall.”

Leading the Sooners through 18 holes is sophomore Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who registered five birdies on her way to a 1-under-par 71. Jao-Javanil, ranked No. 50 nationally, is in a tie for 17th place out of 89 competitors, eight shots behind leader Grace Na of Pepperdine.

Junior Taylor Schmidt and sophomores Emily Collins and Anne-Catherine Tanguay each shot an even-par 72 and are tied for 25th place. Schmidt and Collins each carded a team-high six birdies on the day. Tanguay, who is playing in OU’s No. 1 spot after winning last week’s Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, notched four birdies and four bogeys Monday.

Senior Brooke Collins shot a season-low-tying 77 (+5) and is tied for 65th place, while junior Jacki Marshall, who is competing as an individual, is in a tie for 58th after shooting a first-round 76 (+4).

The Sooners will tee off Tuesday morning beginning at 10:10 CT and conclude the tournament with Wednesday’s third round. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
