NORMAN, Okla. – Veronique Drouin’s OU women’s golf team heads for warmer temperatures to start the 2010 spring slate at the 16-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic, held Feb. 7-9 (Sunday through Tuesday). Purdue University will host the 54-hole competition at the par-72, 6,219-yard Championship Course of the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Leading the Sooners into action will be junior Ellen Mueller (Evansville, Ind.). Mueller had a remarkable streak over OU’s four fall tournaments, posting two top-five performances in addition to top-10 and top-15 finishes. Mueller also nabbed her first-ever hole-in-one at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club over the holiday break.
Freshman Taylor Schmidt (Kincardine, Ontario) looks to continue her impressive contributions to the team and holds the second spot in the lineup. Schmidt played in three of the team’s four fall events. Her best showing was at the Windy City Collegiate where she totaled a three-round 224 for 23rd place, her first top-25 finish as a Sooner.
Chelsey Collins (Louisville, Colo.) will tee off for the first time during her senior season in Puerto Rico, and will be joined by fellow senior Andrea Sellmeyer (McAlester, Okla.) and freshman Aly Seng (Enid, Okla.)
“We’re very excited to have Chelsey back in the lineup,” said Drouin. “She was struggling with her swing but worked really hard over the holidays to get back on track. She’s been playing great so far this semester and I expect her to be an asset to the team this spring.”
Ten of the 15 other teams competing in Puerto Rico are ranked in Golfweek’s top 50. The field includes Purdue (No. 4), Alabama (No. 8), Georgia (No. 16), Oklahoma State (No. 23), Florida State (No. 27), Kent State (No. 33), Northwestern (No. 38), Texas Tech (No. 48), Iowa State (No. 49), Wisconsin (No. 50), Baylor, Indiana, Michigan, Penn State and SMU.
