IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma senior gymnast Kristin Smith was named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Smith posted a pair of crucial 9.9-plus scores in event wins on beam (9.9) and floor (9.925), leading No. 1 Oklahoma to its highest team score since 2004 in a 197.250-196.225 victory over No. 16 Iowa State in OU’s “Beauty and the Beast” spectacular on Feb. 12.
Both of her routines came after the Sooners were in need of a solid score after posting a 9.575 or lower on her respective events. Smith ignited the OU rally on beam with the first of three straight 9.9s to end the rotation, while her floor score was just 0.25 of a point off her career best.
It’s the third weekly conference honor for the Oklahoma City, Okla., native, who earned the accolade once during both her sophomore and junior seasons. Smith is the fourth OU gymnast to garner the award through the first six weeks of the 2010 season, joining teammates Megan Ferguson, Jackie Flanery and Hollie Vise.
Smith and the Sooners hit the road for back-to-back meets beginning with a trip to Columbia, Mo., for a meeting with conference rival Missouri on Feb. 19, before ending the two-meet road trip at Michigan State on Feb. 26.
