NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team opens its 2011 fall season Sept. 11-13 (Sunday-Tuesday) at the Texas A&M “Mo”Morial Invitational, held at the par-72 Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. The Sooners will join 10 other schools in the 54-hole tournament.
This marks OU's eighth time to compete in the "Mo"Morial Invitational. The Sooners finished fifth in the 2009 event, as former Sooner Ellen Mueller tied for third individually.
“I’m really excited to get this season started,” said third-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “The girls have been practicing hard all summer to be ready for this fall and they’ve done a great job.”
Oklahoma will be led by sophomore Chirapat Jao-Javanil in the No. 1 position. Jao-Javanil is coming off a record-breaking freshman season in which her 73.82 stroke average broke Mueller’s single-season school record.
Competing in the No. 2 position will be senior Brooke Collins. Last year, Collins claimed two top-10 finishes in her eight events and shot a career-low round of 70 (-2) in the UNLV Spring Invitational.
Sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay will play in the No. 3 position. Tanguay competed in all 11 of OU’s tournaments last year and recorded three top-15 finishes.
Sophomore Oklahoma State transfer Jade Staggs and junior college transfer Jacki Marshall will make their OU debuts in the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively.
Junior Taylor Schmidt will compete in the “Mo”Morial as an individual. Last season she tied for third at the Dale McNamara Invitational where she also recorded her lowest career 54-hole score of 218.
The 11-team field features the top two finishers in last year’s Big 12 Championship (champion Texas and runner-up Texas A&M), as well as Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Texas, Tulane, UT-San Antonio.
The Sooners will tee off on the back nine Sunday morning beginning at 8:18 and will be grouped with Texas and Tulane. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
