NORMAN, Okla.- The women’s tennis team opened their 2007 Big 12 season Saturday with an upset over No. 53 Texas Tech. The Sooners beat the Red Raiders 4-3 with the deciding match going into three sets.

“It was a much needed win for us,” said head coach Mark Johnson.  “It’s always good to win the first conference match and Texas Tech is a tough team.  I am very pleased that we played as well as we did.”

The match was scheduled to be at Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman but was moved indoors to the Willow Creek Country Club in Oklahoma, City because of sub-40 degree temperatures in the Norman area.

Oklahoma started the match by claiming the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3.

OU’s Rachael Cox and Chelsea Orr led the team at the No. 3 spot with a quick 8-3 victory over Texas Tech’s Kerryn Potgieter and Anne Sophie Fankam.  The duo is now 1-2 on the season at No. 3 doubles.

At No.l doubles Gabby Baker and Irina Lykina defeated Samantha Van der Drift and Janet Durham 8-5.

Junior Christi Baxley brought Oklahoma their first singles win of the afternoon when she defeated Texas Tech’s Janet Durham in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.  Baxley has been a key in Oklahoma’s line up thus far.  She has played at #2, #3, and #4 singles and has had success at all.  Saturday’s win puts her at 5-3 overall in singles this season.

OU's Gabby Baker, who has played doubles only in the past few duals due to a knee injury, played her second singles match of the season for OU at No. 1.  She was defeated by TTU’s Samantha Van der Drift 6-2, 6-3.

The most intense match of the afternoon came at No. 5 singles where Sooner Chelsea Orr and Red Raider Kerryn Potgieter battled through a two hour, 15 minute three set match that was to decide the overall match.  In the end, Orr closed out the third set 6-0 to win the match for Oklahoma.

The Sooners will return to action Sunday March 4 at 12 p.m. against Oral Roberts University at Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
