URBANA, Ill. – The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team swept doubles against Memphis on the final day of the Midwest Blast Sunday to close its fall tournament season.
“This weekend was very productive for the team,” OU head coach David Mullins. “We got a great deal out of each match and we all have a very clear picture of what we need to work on before the spring season.”
Seniors Maria Kalashnikova and Tara Eckel teamed up for the first time this fall, defeating Kathleen Hawkinds and Kelly Gray of Memphis, 8-3.
Freshmen Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie gave up just one game against Courtney Collins and Stefanie Mikesz, topping the Memphis duo, 8-1.
“I am very pleased with the progress we made throughout the fall,” Mullins said. “Whitney (Ritchie), Mia (Lancaster) and Alice (Radu) have settled in about as well as you could possibly hope and they are looking forward to helping us reach another level of success in 2011.”
The Sooners faced Notre Dame in singles on Sunday, but couldn’t keep up with the Fighting Irish, who finished last season ranked No. 5 in the country.
Kalashnikova fought back to win the second set against Notre Dame’s Britney Sanders, but lost after dropping the tiebreaker set, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
Ritchie fell to Kristen Rafael, 6-1, 6-2, Lancaster lost to Chrissie McGaffigan, 6-2, 6-3, and Tara Eckel lost to Jennifer Kellner, 6-4, 6-2.
The Sooners open their spring dual season on Jan. 23 against Wichita State in Norman at 4 p.m.
