Three Sooners Advance at Regionals

TULSA, Okla. – Three members of the OU women’s tennis team won advanced to day two of the 2011 USTA/ITA Central Region Championships after winning two rounds of singles and doubles Friday in Tulsa, Okla.

Marie-Pier Huet, Nicole Long and Whitney Ritchie all advanced to the Round of 16 in singles, while Huet and Ritchie will play in the Round of 16 in doubles.

“I was very impressed with the level of tennis today,” OU Head Coach David Mullins said. “We did well to get three players into the round of 16.”

Huet defeated Maike Zeppernick of Nebraska in the first round of singles, 6-4, 6-2, before topping Malike Rose of OSU in the round of 32, 6-3, 6-3.

Ritchie and Long both received one of the tournament’s 16 seeded positions.

“I was really proud of Whitney Ritchie today,” Mullins added. “She definitely had the toughest draw of any seed.  She battled back twice from a set down against two very tough opponents.”

Ritchie defeated Arkansas’ Kate Lukomskaya in the first round 4-6, 6-4 , 6-4, to advance before beating WSU’s Delia Damaschin in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Long edged out C.C. Sardinha of OSU in the first round in the tiebreaker set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, before topping Janine Weinrich of Nebraska, 6-4, 6-2.

In Saturday’s Round of 16, Huet will face Kanyapat Narattana of OSU, Long will play No. 4 seed Sam Vickers of Tulsa while Ritchie will compete against the tournament’s No. 7 seed, TU’s Anastasia Erofeeva.

In the Doubles Main Draw, Huet and Ritchie were the only OU tandem to advance in doubles Friday.

The duo defeated Leyla Simmons and C.C. Sardinha of OSU, 8-2, after receiving a bye in the first round.

Huet and Ritchie will play Delsart and Love of Southern Illinois in the Round of 16 Saturday.
