Freshmen Have Memorable Debuts

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooner soccer team started three freshmen over the opening weekend and saw three record points and another post two shutouts in goal as OU went 2-0 over the weekend.

The heralded 2009 recruiting class has displayed its skills early in the season and have shown that the Sooners not only have a bright future, but have a deep and talented squad this season.

Freshmen Kelsey Devonshire (GK), Dria Hampton (MF) and Olivia Staff (D) started each of the two contests over the weekend and played a majority of the minutes.

Hampton recorded two assists over the weekend, including one on the team's first goal scored in 2009, while Devonshire posted back-to-back shutouts with a combined three saves. 

Freshman forward Jessican Johnson scored the most athletic goal of the opening weekend as her diving header gave OU a 3-0 lead on Friday night over Missouri State.  In addition, Brianna Turang (D/MF) and Leslie Shurtleff (D/MF) also saw time over the weekend.

Dria Hampton

High School:  Piedmont High School
Dria Hampton assists on the Sooners' first goal in 2009 in the 3-0 win over Missouri State at home.  Two days later, Hampton provides her second assist of the season as OU tops Sam Houston State, 3-0.

Kelsey Devonshire

Hometown:  North Richland Hills, Texas
High School:  Richland Senior High School
Kelsey Devonshire becomes the first Sooner to record a shutout in her debut in goal as OU records a 3-0 win over Missouri State.  Devonshire makes two saves and follows it up with another shutout in the same weekend against Sam Houston State.

Kelsey Kraft

Kelsey Kraft scores the Sooners' lone goal in the season opener at Colorado College (L, 3-1).

Whitney Palmer

Hometown:  Plano, Texas
High School:  Plano High School
Whitney Palmer nets one of OU's eight goals in the 8-0 win over Alabama A&M as the Sooners tie a single-game high for goals scored.  In the same weekend, Palmer records her first multi-goal game with two scores in 4-1 win over Oral Roberts.

Katie Corbitt
2005-2008 | Height: 5-8  |  Position: D  
Hometown: Highland Village, Texas
High School:  Marcus High School
Katie Corbitt, who would go on to play defense in 70-plus games at OU, scores the lone goal of her career in her first game as a Sooner.  The score was also the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime game at Saint Louis.

Savannah Scott

Savannah Scott provides an assist on a game-winning goal scored by Logan Womack in a 2-1 over New Mexico in overtime.

Lauren MacIver

Hometown:  Tulsa, Okla.
High School:  Jenks High School
Lauren MacIver finds the back of the net in her first OU game and provides the game winner in a 2-0 win at Tulsa.

Logan Womack
2000-03 | Height:  5-3  |  Position: F  
Hometown:  Norman, Okla.
High School:  Norman High School
Logan Womack, OU's all-time leading goal scorer, is held scoreless in season opener but bounces back with a goal two days later as the Sooners top Oral Roberts, 3-1.

Jonette Coquat
1998-2001 | Height:  5-8  |  Position: F  
Hometown:  Carrollton, Texas
High School:  Newman Smith High School
Jonette Coquat has one of the best opening weekends in Sooner history with three goals and two assists in her first two games in a Sooner uniform.  Coquat had two goals and an assist in the season-opening win at Tulsa (6-2) and then followed it up with a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win at Arkansas.

Heather Morrison scores two goals and has an assist as OU sets a single-game record for goals scored in an 8-1 win over Drury.
