PALO ALTO, Calif. — George Alex became the latest Sooner to break a program record as he took down OU’s 5,000-meter run record in action at the Payton Jordan Invitational late Sunday night at Stanford University. The junior broke the record with a time of 13.40.73. The record had been broken just two races earlier than Alex after Kevin Schwab finished third overall and first among collegiate athletes with a time of 13:40.81 in the event's second section, shattering the then-previous record of 13:51.13 run last season by Kevin Williams.

Alex overtakes the Big 12 lead in the event and moves to No. 4 nationally while Schwab moves to No. 5 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12 with the result that gives him both the indoor and outdoor records in the distance. Schwab broke the indoor record earlier this year with a time of 13:36.14.

Williams also ran under his former school record as he clocked a time of 13:44.58 in the same event to move into No. 4 in the Big 12. Williams finished eighth overall and fifth among collegiate athletes in the event. Bill Kogel ran the thid-fastest time in Oklahoma history as he clocked a time of 13:51.24.

The women’s 5,000-meter run saw Jessica Engel claim second with the second-fastest time in Oklahoma history, 16:07.64. The junior’s time is the fifth fastest in the Big 12 as she trails just the Oklahoma record of 15:59.70 run by Kellie Cathey in 1982.

The women’s 800-meter run saw Natalie Crain continue her PR streak in the event as she finished fourth with a time of 2:07.00, the fifth-fastest time in Oklahoma history. Freshman Kelsey Brown was just behind Crain with a fifth-place finish, clocking a time of 2:07.17, the seventh-fastest time in Oklahoma history. The times move Crain to No. 4 in the Big 12 and Brown to No. 5 in the conference.

Molly Ferguson staked her claim on the OU performance list as she ran the 10th-fastest 1,500-meter run in Oklahoma history to take fourth in the event with a time of 4:27.45.
