NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team defeated Central Arkansas 3-1 Wednesday evening at McCasland Field House. The Sooners (3-1) got 19 kills from junior Suzy Boulavsky (Houston, Texas) and 16 from junior Caitlin Higgins (Amarillo, Texas) to drop the Bears (3-2), 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18.
Higgins tallied her first double-double of the season, adding 12 digs and OU's only service ace. Junior setter Brianne Barker (Amarillo, Texas) recorded her second double-double of the season with 50 assists and 10 digs. It was Barker's first 50-plus assists match since Oct. 17, 2009 and her sixth career 50-plus assist match.
Sophomore libero Maria Fernanda (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) guided the defense with 21 digs. Freshman Sallie McLaurin (Midwest City, Okla.) dropped three block assists to lead OU at the net.
Jessica Hays and Taylor Hammonds each had 13 kills for the Bears. Marissa Collins' 40 assists and Cristin Curl's 16 digs also led UCA.
The Sooners commanded the opening set, leading 5-0 before Central Arkansas even got on the board. OU held the Bears to a -.031 hitting percentage, while hitting .391. In the second set, OU pulled away midway through the set and fended off the Bears to go into the intermission up 2-0. The table turned in the third as UCA fought back and eventually gained the lead late to win the third set. In the fourth, when the Sooners took the lead at 13-12, they put UCA away to take the match.
The Sooners return to action this weekend at the Houston Invitational. OU opens against No. 17 Tennessee Friday evening at 3:30 p.m. CT.
