OU's Young, Williams Head to World Gymnastics Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma assistant gymnastics coach Guard Young and OU head coach Mark Williams are currently in Ghent, Belgium, preparing for the World Gymnastics Championships, which begin on Sunday, Oct. 28. Young will be competing as a member of the American team, while Williams will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA.

Young competed collegiately at Brigham Young University and is entering his second season as a Sooner assistant coach. He was selected to the U.S. team after his stellar performance at the United States Gymnastics Championship, which were held in Philadelphia, Pa., in August. Young has since competed at the Pan American Gymnastics Championships in Cancun, Mexico, helping the Americans bring home a silver medal.

The meet's opening ceremony is on Saturday night and the American squad begins preliminary competition on Sunday. The top eight teams from that session will then advance to Wednesday's team finals at Ghent's Flanders Sports Arena.

Young, Williams and the remainder of the American contingent have been in Belgium since Sun., Oct. 21, and are taking part in pre-meet practice and preparation.
