Track & Field Set for Big 12 Championships

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma track and field teams return to action this weekend, Feb. 24-25, at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas. The Gilliam Indoor Stadium is the site for the event. Live results and live video links are available at Nine teams competing this weekend are ranked in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top 25. The 21st-ranked OU men’s team is joined by No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 5 Texas and 14th-ranked Kansas State. Texas A&M is fifth on the women’s side, followed by No. 7 Kansas, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Texas Tech and 13th-ranked Iowa State.

Oklahoma has 48 athletes scheduled to compete in the two-day meet. Action gets underway Friday at 11 a.m. CT with the women’s pentathlon. Running events begin Friday at 3 p.m. CT with the mile run preliminaries. Field events get underway at 4 p.m. with the men’s weight throw. Saturday’s action begins at 3 p.m. with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, field events and track events. The men’s 4x400-meter relay caps off the meet at 7:15 p.m. CT.

The men’s team has eighth individuals ranked in the top 30 of their respective events in addition to the distance medley relay which is ranked third on the list. George Alex and Riley Masters are each ranked in two events with Alex’s program records in the mile and 3,000-meter run coming in at 14th and 15th, respectively. Masters is 29th in the mile and 21st in the 3,000-meter run. Masters also ran the anchor leg of the DMR team that set the program record at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Frezer Legesse (17th) and Eric Harasyn (18th) are also ranked in the mile and were a part of the DMR in New York City. Bill Kogel is 24th in the 3,000-meter run, and Malcolm Anderson is seventh in the 60-meter hurdles.

On the women’s side, Tia Brooks continues to have the top mark in the nation in the women’s shot put. Brooks threw 60 feet, eight inches on January 21 in Norman. Karen Shump (13) and Bailey Wagner (22) also maintained a spot on the national list in the event. Shawna Anderson (60-meter dash) and Jessica Engel (3,000-meter run) are 25th in those events, while Kristen Rice is 31st in the high jump.

Oklahoma won the 2010 men’s indoor championship and finished runner-up last season. Since the arrival of head coach Martin Smith in 2005, OU has won 19 individual conference championships and one relay title. The 48 athletes competing this weekend for the Sooners have a combined 40 All-Big 12 Indoor honors and feature three Big 12 champions – Brooks (shot put, 2011), Kevin Schwab (5,000-meter run, 2011) and Shump (shot put, 2010).
