Norman, Okla. - Five University of Oklahoma women's gymnastics team members were named Academic All-Americans for their performances in competition and in the classroom this past academic year. Sooner recipients were: Tracey Allen, Leticia Ishii, Ginger Russell, Shanna Sanders and Nicole Tycer.

In order to qualify for the honor, the gymnasts must have maintained a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and have been on the active roster.

"This is an endorsement of OU's academic student life center and its mission to provide the best academic support system in the country," said Head Coach Becky Buwick. "It is a direct reflection of the individuals' commitment to excellence in the classroom, arena and as members of society. Each of our gymnasts who have earned this high honor has my admiration and sincere congratulations."

Ishii was the lone Sooner gymnast to carry a 4.0 grade point average. She was one of 30 female gymnasts across the nation to maintain a flawless GPA. Russell, Sanders and Tycer also were listed on the 1999 Academic All-Big 12 Team.

The OU women's gymnastics team finished the 1999 season 18-9 and ranked 25th in the country. The Sooners finished third at the Big 12 Championships and earned their second straight bid to the NCAA Midwest Regionals where they posted a fourth-place finish.
