Tennis' Velicka Advances To Title Match

NORMAN, Okla.   The Oklahoma men’s tennis team has had a strong showing that this year’s Wilson/ITA Central Region Singles and Doubles Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.
n Sunday’s action, OU’s sophomore Marek Velicka qualified for the singles title match by defeating two high seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys. Unseeded Velicka shocked top-seeded Mark Van Elden with a three-set thriller in the quarterfinals, winning 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. The Czech Republic native then eliminated Boris Kuharic, 7-6, 6-3, in the semifinals.

Velicka will face No. 6 seeded Rohan Gajjar of Arkansas Monday for the title. He has also qualified as one of four singles players from the Central Region that will participate in the National Indoor Singles and Doubles Championships on Nov. 4-7, in Ann Arbor, Mich.

“We have had an outstanding tournament,” said Sooner coach Paul Lockwood. “Marek Velicka has really shown the region what a great player he’s capable of being. Our doubles teams were the only ones to qualify for the quarterfinals. We have posted some good wins here. I’m very happy with our results and we still have a lot of tennis ahead of us in the next couple of weeks with the team playoffs and Velicka advancing to nationals.”

OU’s Federico Chavarria and Alexei Ivanov suffered a tough 9-8 loss to OSU’s Felipe Diaz and Boris Kuharic in doubles semifinals action.

By picking up semifinals consolation wins, Oklahoma’s Silviu Tanasoiu and Lee Gregg will face each other in the consolation title match Monday.  Tanasoiu shutout Tulsa’s Will Gray (6-0, 6-0), while Gregg defeated Jonathon Tishler of Drake, 6-4, 6-3.
