NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma and Tulsa men’s tennis teams resumed its in-state tennis rivalry Thursday at OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Even though only 120 miles separates the universities, the two have not faced each other in five years. Today's match resulted in an easy 6-1 victory for Oklahoma, which pushed the Sooners’ overall record to 15-3. The 37th-ranked Golden Hurricane dropped to 14-9 and saw its three-match winning streak end.

With the win, Oklahoma extends its flawless Region V record to 6-0. OU returns to Big 12 play this weekend at Nebraska.

The 48th-ranked Sooners struck first by winning two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the contest.

Junior Tommy Garrison and senior Ondrej Fukala moved to 11-3 on the season with an 8-5 win over TU's Achim Roth and Aleksander Charpantidis at the top slot. At No. 2 doubles, OU's senior Silviu Tanasoiu and sophomore Marek Velicka produced the same score by defeating Diego Camacho and Andy Connelly. The Sooner pair now stands at 11-5.

The young Tulsa squad came out firing in singles, giving the Sooners some competition for awhile. As the match carried on, the Golden Hurricane faded and OU's experienced squad prevailed in five out of six singles matches. OU won three of four singles in tie-breaking fashion.

Clinching the match for Oklahoma was Tanasoiu at No. 5 singles. After an easy 6-2 opening set win, he was forced into a second-set tie-breaker for a 7-6 (5) victory over Camacho.

Garrison also won his match via a tie-breaker. He opened with a 6-3 win at No. 4 singles but Will Gray of TU pushed the Enid, Okla., native into a second set rally. Gray was up 6-2 in the tie breaker but Garrison responded as the crowd cheered him on to a 7-6 (2) second set and match win. With the win Garrison extended his winning streak to 12 straight matches and improved to 13-3 on the season.

OU's No. 1 singles player, Velicka, had a tough 7-6 first set but concluded his second set on an ace serve for a 6-2 match win. Velicka owns a stellar 14-4 singles record and recently upset two ranked opponents. He defeated Texas A&M’s 14th-ranked Jerry Makowski and 25th-ranked Callum Beale of Texas last week.
