NORMAN, Okla. The OU men’s tennis team defeated Nebraska Friday afternoon at the Northland Raquet Club in Kansas City, Mo. to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship.

The No. 5-seed Sooners beat the No. 4-seed Huskers 4-2 in the opening-round match and will face No. 1-seed Baylor, the No. 4-ranked team nationally, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center.

Nebraska’s Adrian Szatmary upset OU’s Vaclav Kucera (6-3, 6-3), ranked No. 60 by the ITA, in straight sets, but the depth of the Sooner lineup proved to great to overcome with wins in the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 slots.

At No. 2, Andrei Daescu cruised past Husker David Bendheim, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-3, after losing a tiebreak in the first set. Sooner Marek Velicka took out Hendrik Stahmer (6-1, 6-2) in straight sets at the No. 3 spot.

Federico Chavarria fought off a fiercely competitive Renato Melo, needing extra games in the second set to take victory for the 6-4, 7-5 win.

Friday’s match was delayed by rain and moved indoors, an environment in which the Sooners enjoyed similar success over their first-round opponent. Oklahoma and Nebraska split their 2007 season series with OU earning the shut out, 4-0, at the ITA Indoor Central Regional before the Huskers tolled their revenge with a 5-2 win over Sooners in the Big 12 regular-season opener.

The other semifinal match pits No. 2-seed Oklahoma State and No. 3-seed Texas.  That match will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, April 29.
