NORMAN, Okla.  -- The No. 7 Oklahoma women's gymnastics squad defeated 21st-ranked Minnesota 196.500-195.675 on Friday night in front of 1,540 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center in OU's "Beauty and the Beast" spectacular.  The Sooners shared the floor with the Oklahoma wrestling squad, who rolled over N.C. State by a final score of 38-6.

OU won three events on the night, as Oklahoma gymnasts also took home individual titles on vault (Melanie Root - 9.875), bars (Hollie Vise - 9.875) and floor (Jackie Flanery, Haley DeProspero and Ashley Jackson - 9.85 for all three).

"We were much more consistent with our landings throughout the night and beam was much better for the most part than our last time out," said OU head coach K.J. Kindler.  "I thought we also brought a lot more energy into the event and sustained that throughout the night.  It was a great atmosphere, with support from both the wrestling and gymnastics fans, as the event was a big success for both Oklahoma squads."

OU burst out of the gates with a season-high 49.200 on vault as the final five Oklahoma gymnasts posted scores of 9.8 or greater.  The Sooners were paced by Root's season-high 9.875 from the fourth position in her first career event title.  Tallying a pair of 9.85s were Jackie Flanery and Ashley Jackson, while Natalie Ratcliff and Sara Stone rounded out the team scoring with routines of 9.825 and 9.8, respectively.

The Sooners took the lead through the first rotation, as Minnesota posted a team score of 48.925 on bars - including a team-high 9.85 from anchor Kristin Furukawa.

Oklahoma posted its second-straight event score of 49.00 or better on the night with a 49.075 on bars.  Hollie Vise won her third consecutive bars title with a 9.875.  The Sooners received a pair of 9.825s from Megan Ferguson and Root (tied a season best), while Jessica Kinder (career-high 9.8) and DeProspero (9.75) completed the team tally.

OU extended its lead to 98.275-97.500 at the midway point as the Golden Gophers scored a 48.575 on vault (led by Carmelina Carabajal's 9.85).

The Sooners rebounded from their beam errors in Monday's loss to Arkansas, scoring a 49.075 on the apparatus against the Golden Gophers.  After a fall in the second spot, OU closed with four routines of 9.8 or higher, led by Ferguson and Vise's routines of 9.875.  Oklahoma received a 9.825 from DeProspero in the anchor position, a 9.8 from Ratcliff and a 9.7 from Kinder.

Wrapping up the win on floor, the Sooners posted its fourth score of 49-plus with a team tally of 49.150 on the apparatus.  Oklahoma received a 9.825 from Smith and closed with three straight scores of 9.85 from Flanery, DeProspero and Jackson.

OU opens up its Big 12 slate on the road at No. 12 Nebraska on Feb. 8.  The Sooners defeated the Huskers in both meetings of the 2008 season.
