Norman, Okla. - Northwestern starting pitcher Zach Schara held the Oklahoma baseball team to only four hits in the Wildcats' 4-0 victory over the Sooners Friday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. Schara (2-1) threw his first complete game and shutout victory on the season as OU was held scoreless for the second time this season. The Sooners dropped to 5-9 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 7-5.
Northwestern jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning. An error by Sooner shortstop Sergio Garcia (0-for-2) on the first batter of the game eventually led to two unearned runs off OU starter Austin Mix (0-2). The only two hits in the inning, two RBI singles by the Wildcats' fifth and sixth hitters in the lineup, scored both Northwestern runs.
Northwestern finished off its scoring with single runs in the fourth and eighth innings.
Two of the Sooners' four hits were for extra bases. Freshman second baseman Matt Fisher (1-for-3) and senior leftfielder Bryan King (1-for-3) both nailed doubles. King currently ranks among the Big 12 Conference leaders in the category. Senior third baseman Jason Bartlett and junior designated hitter Charlie Frasier collected the other two hits for OU, as the pair finished the game with 1-for-4 performances.
Mix, who threw his longest outing of the season at eight innings, surrendered nine hits, walked three batters and fanned five.
The series continues tomorrow at L. Dale Mitchell Park at 2 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 12 p.m.
