NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team climbed the leaderboard Monday at the 18-team Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman to finish in sixth place after shooting a final-round 296, the fourth best score of the day. The Sooners recorded a three-round 22-over par (887) on the par-72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course, 27 strokes behind champion Baylor.

Three Sooners completed the tournament in the top 25. Heather Wright led OU in the third round by firing an even-par 72 to finish the competition at +2 and in a tie for 12th place. The junior played consistent golf with rounds of 72, 74 and 72 despite temperatures hovering around 40 degrees both days.

"I had a pretty good day today and I feel like I hit some pretty solid shots," said Wright. "There were some birdie putts that didn't fall and, if they had, I could have been five or six under. I guess I'm just saving up for the Big 12 Championships."

Chelsey Collins finished in a tie for 16th with a three-round 221 (+5) after shooting a final-round 76 (+4). Collins, a true freshman, recorded the best round of the tournament for the Sooners Sunday with her first-round 2-under-par 70.

Kendall Dye notched a 22nd-place finish with her 223 (+7).  The sophomore's 74 Monday tied as the team's second-best score of the day.

Junior Kelly Jacques, who entered the day in a tie for 49th, climbed 15 spots after shooting a 74 (+2).  She finished in a tie for 34th place with her 225 (+9). After a pair of 79s on Sunday, freshman Andrea Sellmeyer shot a 4-over-par 76 Monday to finish in a tie for 69th (+18).

Six Sooners competed unattached from team scoring.  Lone seniors Jaclyn Stelzer and Megan Goodwin shot a 223 (+7) and a 225 (+9) to finish tied for 22nd and 34th, respectively.  They were the tournament's top two scorers among the 18 who competed as individuals.

Sophomore Sydney Lee recorded a 230 (+14) to finish in a tie for 55th, freshman Ryanne Elmer carded a 242 (+26) to tie for 92nd and freshman Joyce Trus finished in a tie for 96th after shooting a 243 (+27). Sophomore Staci Smoot finished 32 over in 103rd place (248).

"We posted a better round today than we did yesterday afternoon, and given the weather conditions I'm happy about that," said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson.  "As far as how we ended up as a team, we're not very happy about that. But we're just happy we beat a couple of teams that we really needed to beat going into the day. That was pretty crucial.

"I think, in the long run and going into Big 12s, it was a good thing that we struggled a little bit. It opened up some weaknesses that we really need to work on in the next few days before the Big 12 Championships."

Baylor claimed the Susie Maxwell Berning title after firing a tournament-record 860 (-4). The Bears broke the previous record set by Oklahoma State last year (867). Baylor's Anna Rehnholm finished in second place with a 210 (-6) while teammate Hannah Burke finished in fifth with a 213 (-3).

Stacy Lewis of Arkansas captured medalist honors by carding a tournament-record 8-under-par 208.  Lewis, who finished in a tie for fifth place at last week's LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship, broke former Sooner Lisa Meldrum's three-round Susie Maxwell Berning record of 211 set in 2002.

The Sooners will head to Waco, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Championships April 16-18.
