NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team returns to the links Feb. 27-28 for the 15-team Ashworth Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.

The tournament, hosted by the University of Southern California, is in its 29th consecutive year.  Play will begin Monday with 36 holes on the par-71, 6,900-yard layout with the final round scheduled for Tuesday.

Oklahoma is coming off its best performance of the season, a top-10 finish against a strong field at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawaii, Feb. 8-10.

Ashworth Invitational Notes

“We’re looking to take the small success we had in Hawaii and expanding on it,” OU head coach Jim Ragan said.  “We want to put three solid rounds together.”

The Sooners will be led by two-time All-American and 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year Anthony Kim.  Seniors Shawn LaFontaine and Justin Fraley, who both recorded top-40 individual finishes at the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate, will help anchor the OU squad. Fraley fired a team season-best and career-low 66 in the opening round in Waikoloa.  Junior Nick Sheedy and sophomore Phillip Bryan complete the Oklahoma lineup.

The Sooners are aiming to build upon their early success this spring.  After taking No. 11/9 Tennessee to the wire in a January match play duel and recording a tie for ninth in Hawaii, Oklahoma will once again face a solid field in California.  The Ashworth field will feature eight teams ranked in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings and two of the top five teams in the nation (UCLA and BYU).
