An Inside Glimpse #2, November 6, 2002-

The Sooners are gearing up for their first intrasquad of the pre-season. This week the OU women's gymnastics team members will be putting on their competitive leotards and performing in front of their coaches, teammates, and a panel of judges. This first intrasquad will not be open to the public, but the responsibility and intensity of solidifying a place in the line up is at stake.

Senior co-captain Leah Mueller feels that, "Having an intrasquad at this time of the year is a good check point to see where we all stand and a measurement of our ultimate potential. It also gives the team something to strive for. It is always good to see a light at the end of the tunnel. As for the team as a whole, I see us ahead of last year. Everyone looks very strong and we have more depth and bodies to choose from, which is a bonus."

The majority of our team will be debuting new skills on nearly every event. The coaching staff is anxious to see how each individual will perform under pressure. Coach Steve Nunno is paying close attention to the focus, toughness and accountability of the six new freshmen.

This intrasqad will have a different format than any other meet. Each competitor will be allowed a 15-minute warm up period before they compete on the event. The girls will start on floor and then go in Olympic order. Our team is doing a terrific job during our morning workout schedule. We meet four days a week and the athletes are staying motivated and are pushing each other. This last week they swam, did aerobics and lifted weights. Afternoon workouts have become more consistent. Our focus has shifted to getting half sets together with the new skills they have learned up to now.

As I promised you last week, here is a preview of some of the gymnastic skills our athletes will be adding or are currently working on for their 2003 routines.
